The short answer
Local SEO is the work of helping your business appear when people nearby search for what you offer, such as "plumber near me" or "bakery in Coral Gables." Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence. In practice, that means a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, a website with clear service and location pages, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
When someone nearby needs what you offer, they search for it, often on their phone and often ready to call. Local SEO is about making sure your business is one of the options they see. You don’t need to be a marketing expert to get the basics right.
How local search results work
When you search for something like “accountant near me,” Google usually shows a map with a short list of businesses, often called the local pack, followed by regular website results.
Google has said that local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher or the location in their search.
- Prominence: how well known and well regarded your business is, online and off.
You can’t change where a customer is standing, but you can influence relevance and prominence a great deal.
Your Google Business Profile
For most local businesses, this is the single most important step. Your profile is what appears in the map results, and it tells Google what you do, where, and when.
Make sure it’s claimed, verified, and complete: the right primary category, accurate hours, services, photos, and a clear description. We cover this step by step in how to set up and optimize your Google Business Profile.
Reviews
Reviews help customers choose and contribute to prominence. Focus on getting a steady flow of genuine reviews:
- Ask happy customers soon after you’ve helped them.
- Make it easy with a direct link.
- Reply to every review, politely and helpfully.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google’s rules and erodes trust.
Consistent business details
Your business name, address, and phone number appear in many places: your website, your Google profile, social media, directories, and industry listings. When those details match everywhere, it’s easier for customers and search engines to trust them.
Pick one exact format for your name, address, and phone number, and correct listings that are outdated or inconsistent.
Your website
Your Google profile gets people’s attention; your website often closes the deal. A website that supports local search usually has:
- A clear page for each main service, explaining what you do, who it’s for, and how to get started.
- Your location or service area stated plainly, on relevant pages and in your contact details.
- Page titles that say what and where, such as “Roof Repair in Fort Lauderdale | Business Name.”
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages, since most local searches happen on phones.
- An easy way to call or contact you from every page.
A simple first-month checklist
If you’re starting from scratch, work through this list:
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and complete every section.
- Choose the most accurate primary category.
- Add at least ten good, real photos.
- Check that your name, address, and phone number match on your website and main listings.
- Make sure each main service has its own page on your website.
- Ask five recent happy customers for a review.
- Set a monthly reminder to update your profile and respond to reviews.
The bottom line
Local SEO isn’t a trick. It’s making sure that when people nearby look for what you do, they find accurate, complete, trustworthy information about your business, and an easy way to contact you.

Common questions
How long does local SEO take to work?
Some fixes, like completing your Google Business Profile, can make a difference within weeks. Building prominence through reviews, content, and links is gradual and usually takes several months. Nobody can honestly guarantee a specific ranking or timeline.
Do I need a physical location for local SEO?
No. Service-area businesses that travel to customers can still appear in local results by setting a service area on their Google Business Profile and creating clear service and area pages on their website.
Should I create a page for every city I serve?
Only if each page has something genuinely useful and specific to say about that area. Many near-identical city pages with swapped place names tend to help no one and can hold a site back.
